Tarzan - Groundbreaking Technology Coupled with a Classic Story

Tarzan is the Academy Award-winning animated movie produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. It was released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1999, becoming the thirty-seventh film in the Disney animated features canon. Based on the famous story by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the story follows the adventures of a feral child raised in the African jungle who returns to England to reclaim his birthright. This adaptation of the Tarzan tale is the first animated version

Disney's Tarzan is considered the final great hoorah before the slump of the early 2000s. The film earned $171,091,819 domestically and $448,191,819 worldwide. It managed to top both Mulan and Hercules and was the first feature since The Lion King to open at #1.

The film begins in the late 1880 when a young couple and their infant son are shipwrecked off the coast of Africa. The parents build a tree house, only to fall victim to a savage leopard, named Sabor. The infant son is about to be killed, when Kala, a female ape, saves him. The babe is raised by a clan of apes, proving his worth by eventually killing Sabor. An expedition of humans, led by Professor Porter, who is accompanied by his daughter Jane and a hunter named Clayton, stumbled upon Tarzan and his tribe, forcing them to flee. Eventually the team sets sails for England. Tarzan must choose whether or not he will join Jane in the civilized world, or if he will stay to reign as "Lord of the Apes."

To create the stunning 3D backgrounds, the production team pioneered a bold 3D painting and rendering technique known as "Deep Canvas." This process allows artists to create CGI backgrounds that look, by and large, like traditional paintings. Indeed, this technique prompted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to award the creators of Deep Canvas a Technical Achievement Oscar in 2003.

Following Tarzan, Deep Canvas was used for key sequences in Atlantis: The Lost Empire, in particular the engaging panoramic shots of the island and several action sequences. Furthermore, the Deep Canvas technique was used to create roughly 75% of the backgrounds and environments in Disney's animated action film, Treasure Planet, though yielding less than spectacular results. Deep Canvas was likewise used on the last two traditionally animated theatrical releases, Brother Bear and Home on the Range. Presently, despite the extravagant results of Tarzan, the Deep Canvas technique was shelved as Disney moved towards Pixar-based computer generated animation.

There are many job opportunities that await a graduating electrician. Picking the right school will ultimately dictate the field of interest or specialization of the student.

Some schools only offer the basics of the electrician profession. After you have selected the school of your choice and started your classes, soon you will know which field you are really meant for. After learning about the basic principles, you will have a better idea which specialization to take.

If suddenly you realize that the school you are in cannot provide the necessary training for you in the field that you like, it is relatively easy to transfer to another school. Robin Hood, the twenty-first animated film released by Walt Disney Studios, premiered on November 8, 1973. It was the first feature the studio released that had no creative input from Disney himself, who died in 1966, and had many Hollywood insiders doubting the ability of the studio to carry on without him. The success or failure of this one production would make or break the most successful animation studio in U.S. history.

With so much at stake, it is amazing that the studio had allotted such a meager budget to the production. To save costs, the animators were ordered to recycle animation cells from previous films. These cells could be amended, touched up, and re-colored, allowing new characters to perform old routines. Specifically, the song-and-dance sequence for "The Phony King of England" used cells from The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, and Snow White. Moreover, the animation cells of Baloo in The Jungle Book were used to animate Little John, while Robin Hood's cells were originally those used for Peter Pan. The sequences involving the snake Sir Hiss and his mesmerizing of King John are recycled cells used for Kaa in The Jungle Book.

The original theatrical release, in 1973, earned approximately $9.5 million. This was the biggest box office return Disney had ever enjoyed up to that point. It was a tremendous success, though some critics cited the lack of grandeur that marked earlier Disney films.

Despite the minor detractions, Robin Hood is still one of the most beloved films in the Disney canon, with fans citing the lively characters, catchy songs, and intelligent dialogue as reasons for its appeal. The 1982 re-release garnered even more box office success for Disney, catapulting the studio past its creative founder and well into a new generation of animated filmmaking.

Aladdin - The Most Successful Movie of 1992

Aladdin is the multi-award-winning movie from Walt Disney Pictures. Released to rave reviews in 1992, Aladdin was the thirty-first animated feature released by Disney Studios. It was released at the pinnacle of the Disney renaissance that had begun with the release of The Little Mermaid. It was the most successful movie of 1992, earning over $217 million domestically and $504 million worldwide.

The film was founded on the collection of stories gathered by assorted authors over centuries, famously translated by Richard Francis Burton, known collectively as The One Thousand and One Nights. Also known as The Arabian Nights, this source material includes the story of Aladdin, a beggar boy living in a Chinese city, who is recruited by an evil sorcerer to retrieve a magic lamp from a perilous cave. Rounding out the story are rudiments taken from The Thief of Baghdad (1940). Indeed, many of the characters and plot elements were altered, including moving the Chinese city of the source material to the fictional Arabian city of Agrabah.

The most famed actor involved with the production was the famous comic and actor, Robin Williams. His involvement helped increase the visibility of film, catapulting it from a B level movie to an A movie. His involvement would later make celebrity involvement a marketable feature for future animated features. The production of Aladdin was an passionate process that involved extensive revisions. Studio chief at the time, Jeff Katzenberg received the script in 1991, only to have it immediately rewritten. He felt Aladdin's mother should be taken out of the story, the character of Jasmine toughened, and Aladdin's personality should more resemble a young Harrison Ford. Moreover, the parrot Iago, who was initially written as a calm, British character, was made into a manic vehicle for the comic Gilbert Gottfried.

The musical score was penned by Alan Menken, garnering him the 1992 Academy Award for Best Original Music Score. The lyrics of the songs were written by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, with the title song "A Whole New World" sung notably by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. The song won the Oscar for the Best Original Song as well a Grammy Award for Best Song from a Soundtrack.

Aladdin was completed by two direct-to-video sequels: The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), and an animated television series, Aladdin, set between the two sequels. In 1988, it was suggested Disney make an animated musical adaptation of Aladdin, but that idea proved less well-liked than a musical based on The Lion King.
