Treasure Planet is a science fiction animated movie produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Released in 2002, Treasure Planet marked the 42nd animated feature in the Disney canon. It is a science fiction variation of Robert Louis Stevenson?s beloved novel Treasure Island. It employed the revolutionary technique of featuring two-dimensional animation over three-dimensional backgrounds. Indeed, this technique was used effectively on the character of John Silver, where his cybernetic arm was computer generated and the remainder of his body hand-drawn.

The plot is loosely based on Stevenson's Treasure Island. Jim Hawkins, voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, witnesses a ship crashing near the inn, where he works. The ship's dying pilot gives him a sphere and warns, "beware the cyborg." Shortly thereafter, a gang of pirates raids the inn. Jim, his mother, and friend, Dr. Delbert Doppler, voiced by David Hyde Pierce, barely escape. Jim discovers the sphere is a holographic map that leads to the renowned "Treasure Planet." Jim and Doppler commission a ship to find this planet. Among the ship's crew is John Silver, voiced by Brian Murray, whom Jim suspects to be the cyborg. As the ship moves towards Treasure Planet, a mutiny erupts, led by Silver. The planet turns out to be a space station, wherein Jim, Silver and an unscrupulous pirate named Scroop seek out the treasure.

Treasure Planet was in production for over four and a half years, the original idea having been pitched by Ron Clements in 1985. Curiously, it was during this same pitch meeting that John Musker pitched the story for the terrifically successful The Little Mermaid. Roughly 350 crew members began principal production in 2000. The animators were inspired by the painterly illustrators associated with the Brandywine School of Illustration (including Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth). The animators utilized the animation technique known as Deep Canvas. Deep Canvas allowed the animators to place the camera's eye anywhere the action or scene demanded, much like a live-action film. Furthermore, the film was made with an adherence to Ron Clements's 70/30 Law, wherein 70% of the animation would be of the traditional, hand-drawn variety, and 30% would be computer generated.

The prologue of the film originally featured an adult Jim Hawkins narrating the story, but this idea was scrapped as it was deemed too brooding and stymied character involvement. Additionally, a key sequence featuring Jim working on his solar surfer was to be included in the film, but the length of the opening surfing sequence required the scene be cut.

Unfortunately, Treasure Planet was a box office disappointment. Indeed, many called it a box office bomb, grossing only $38 million in light of its $140 million budget. Disney?s Buena Vista Distribution was forced to immediately adjust its fourth quarter earnings statement by $47 million. Despite the meager performance, Treasure Planet was favorably received by the critics, indeed according to respected critic, Stephen Hunter, the film "boasts the purest of Disney raptures: It unites the generations, rather than driving them apart.?

Brother Bear - One of Disney's Biggest Successes To Date

Marking the 43rd film in Disney's line of animated features, the film, originally entitled Bears, marked a short-lived return to traditionally hand-drawn animation. It was the third feature completed at the Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida, and subsequently the last. The studio shut down the Orlando facility in an effort to produce computer animated features.

Released in 2003, Brother Bear is the story of Kenai, an Inuit lad who tracks down and kills the bear that killed his older brother. The murder angers the Great Spirits, who transform him into a bear as punishment. Kenai's living brother, Denahi, thinking he was killed by the newly transformed bear, hunts him down for revenge. As brother unknowingly hunts brother, Kenai's only hope is to befriend his own worst enemy, a grizzly cub named Koda. Only Koda can show him the way to reverse the transformation.

It should be said that the comedy supplied by the moose characters of Tuke and Rutt is compliments of Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. The duo essentially reprized their roles of Bob and Doug McKenzie of SCTV fame. The skit, and subsequently the relationship between Tuke and Rutt, involves two dim brothers who can never agree on anything, but manage to reconcile because of their lack of short-term memory. It's their relationship that inspires Koda to reconcile with Kenai after their falling out.

Critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers dismissing the film as a thematic retreading of territories covered by movies like The Fox and the Hound, The Lion King, and even Ice Age. On the other hand, critics like Roger Ebert gave the film a thumbs up, noting its moving story and convincing characterizations. Other critics especially liked the surreptitious change of the film's aspect ratio. The film, while Kenai is a human, is projected in standard 1.75:1 ratio. When Kenai is transformed into a bear, the aspect ratio changes to an anamorphic 2.35:1. Likewise, the art direction changes in color and in tone, from realistic and dark to colorful and otherworldly.

The film was a box office achievement, earning $85,000,000 domestically and $165,000,000 worldwide. The DVD release, distributed in 2004, raked in an additional $167 million. Home on the Range: Where the Skies Aren't Cloudy All Day

Come on people and "bust a moo." When Home on the Range was released on April 2, 2004, it was designated to be the last traditionally animated feature for Disney. The studio proclaimed, to the surprise of industry insiders, that all features following Home on the Range would be rendered with CGI imagery rather than the CAPS method, which had been in use since The Rescuers Down Under. Indeed, Disney's traditional method of animation dates back to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. This decision compelled Disney to fire most of its animation department.

Pre-production for the film, originally entitled Sweating Bullets, began as early as 1995, following the release of Pocahontas. This version of the feature detailed the adventures of a calf named Bullets who works to save his herd from a band of ghost cattle rustlers. This embodiment of the story as well as the title were changed in 2002. The new title, Home on the Range, was inspired by the classic country song of the same name.

The new version of the story follows the adventures of three dairy cows, voiced by Roseanne Barr, Judi Dench, and Jennifer Tilly, as they struggle to apprehend the nefarious cattle rustler, Alameda Slim, voiced by Randy Quaid. The cows hope the bounty on Slim will pay the mortgage on their beleaguered farm, but getting him to the sheriff proves harder than they thought when another bounty hunter, Rico, voiced by Charles Dennis, wants a cut of the action.

Scheduling problems, brought on by a re-editing of the initial plot, forced Disney to flip Home on the Range with Brother Bear, which had been scheduled for release in 2004. This caused a terrible crisis for the Brother Bear production team, but afforded Will Finn and John Sanford, the directors of Home on the Range, the time they needed. Though it had been a traditional practice for Disney to release features on Thanksgiving or during the summer, Michael Eisner decided to release Home on the Range in April. Many critics felt this was intentionally done to highlight the glaring costs of traditional animation, playing into his decision to make all future features with CGI. Though Sanford and Finn had anticipated a G rating, the MPAA rated the film as PG because of a joke alluding to surgically enhanced breasts during the opening sequence.

The critical response was mixed, with most of the disparagement reserved for the plot. The average rating, according to Metacritic, was 4.2 out of 10. Though the budget was $110 million, the film only managed to garner about $50 million domestically and $103 million internationally. This qualified the movie as a box office failure. Though this made Eisner's case about traditionally drawn features, professionals in and affiliated with Disney urged for a return to traditional animation, culminating in the slating of The Princess and the Frog (2009) as a traditionally animated feature.
